Thumbs down for Netscape 8
Wrap-up: Why I uninstalled Netscape 8.0.1
Now I’m sure that I haven’t covered everything in Netscape 8, either good or bad. However, the problems outlined above were enough to entice me to uninstall Netscape 8 completely from my PC.
Frankly, after their naïve (or worse) implementation of their “security options”, my estimation of Netscape’s trustworthiness has taken a beating.
In a brief summary, Netscape…
- fixes many, many bugs but displayed a lack of thoroughness in initially releasing a seriously buggy v8;
- attempts to make it easier for users to reliably display websites by utilising two browser engines, but sabotages any attempt at better security by using an untrustworthy method of determining safe websites;
- opens the door for undesired software to be installed with the browser package.
I, for one, will not reinstall Netscape unless these problems are addressed. With Netscape’s lack of care in addressing major security issues over the last year, I won’t be holding my breath.
Blessings, Steve
